While showing my high school best friend, Steve, around Finland…
In the midst of ignoring the impending doom of D-day (the one day away due date for my dissertation defense) I headed off to London for a quick work trip. I did the same trip about a year ago (granted to get tattoos and to celebrate my birthday) and it gave me an idea to start exploring behind the amazeballs brands that I get to meet every time I migrate over to London. Unfortunately due an overload of circumstances, a tumultuous year and me basically falling off the face of the earth after a slight nervous breakdown I was unable to finish what I had started. After my guilty pleasure trip to the SoHo news stands I read an article in Sunday Girl that reminded of the exact reasons I had wanted to undertake the project last year.
The biggest way to change the way how the industry works is to start with the your own relationship to clothes. I’ve sadly been a hoarder, blinded by love at first sight to any pretty shiny thing that crossed my wallet. I started feeling the weight of my own negative impact when I moved out, and finally had a normal closet and the worlds tiniest hamper. It was my first wake-up call that not only did I need to do a spring cleaning but I needed to change the way I shop. I found my own ideology altered once more as I actually began talking across the industry seeing how everyone contributes in a different way. What has inspired me the most was a combination of the amazing people working for a better industry… and the gut wrenching realisation I am truly not even close to being the only hoarder on the planet. Meaning there are more people generating clothing waste per year than there are people genuinely trying to solve the problem.
I know these days it truly seems like sustainability and conscious fashion are being shoved down your throat as ideologies and as trends yet no substantial action has really been taken to get the actual movement to the masses. Learning from these industry movers and shakers I have had the pleasure to meet it has become so clear that in order for these movements to be taken more seriously than trumps toupee it is the passion of the individuals that create the mass.
London proving once again that even though it scares the balls out of me, it is always worth going back to. Or the perfect venue to wander about when in need of magical distractions that keep you from your dissertation. As for now here is three cheers to the wonders that is London, and it’s never ending void of inspiration thanks to it’s cosmopolitan make-up.
Happy June !
